Spain, officially the “Kingdom of Spain” is a sovereign country in Europe located in the Iberian Peninsula. The territory of the country is compromised of mainland and number of other islands in different regions.

The country is bordered by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean towards the West; and France and Andorra towards the North. Towards the East lies the Mediterranean Sea. The country has rich ancient and modern history, rich culture, traditions, and Unique architect and towns. The country was once one of the largest empires in the world, having territories and colonies all over the world.

Also, the Spanish explorers discovered most of the central and South American lands and islands. Today Spain is one of the most developed and advanced countries in the world and has a fourteenth largest economy in the world in terms of “nominal GDP”. The country is a member of the European Union (UN), United Nations, World Trade Organization and NATO.

It is predicted that the humans arrived in the region of modern Spain approx. 35,000 years ago. The area fell to the Roman empire around 200 BCE. Before their arrival, different local tribes were living in the region like Iberians and Celts. Romans ruled the region for over 600 years and many changes were made in the area during their period of rule.

Some of the remains of that era can still be seen. In the middle ages (by the start of the 8th century) Spain was conquered by the Muslim Armies of North Africa. Muslim forces led by the famous “Tariq ibn Ziyad” landed at Gibraltar and burnt their ships so that there should be no way back, “either we conquer or either we die, no retreat”.

The famous “Gibraltar” was also named after “Tariq ibn Ziyad” and Gibraltar is precisely known as Jabal-e-Tariq (Mountain of Tariq in Arabic). Soon the Muslim forces captured much of the Spanish area and established the first Muslim empire in Europe.

Muslims did much for the prosperity of Spain. Cities were beautified, the adequate water supply was ensured and a number of exotic plants were introduced. Also, canals were dug, and Western techniques of the plantation of oranges, pomegranates, grapes, and peaches were used. The streets were illuminated by lamps and healthcare was insured.

Also, the ruler ensured the religious freedom of all the religious groups especially Jews and Christians. The architectural wonders Muslims constructed in their period still exist and are one of the favorite spots of historians and tourists.

Unfortunately, in 1492 Muslim rule came to end in Spain and Christian forces recaptured the region. Muslims were given the option to convert to Christianity or leave the area. Since then, the era of Imperial Spain started and their conquest for colonizing the whole word began.

The geography of Spain is mostly mountainous and features a number of mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, lakes and national parks. Some of the mountain ranges include Cordillera Cantábrica, Sistema Ibérico, Sistema Central.

Overseas territories of Spain include a number of islands in the Alboran Sea, two cities of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa, Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands plus two large archipelagoes in the Mediterranean Sea. In 2017, Spain was the second most visited country in the world. Due to unique architect, warm beaches, diverse geography, rich history and culture, millions of tourists visit Spain annually.

During the 18th and 19th centuries Spain lacked behind its competitors like England, France, etc. in terms of industrialization, military, technological advancements other sectors. But soon after the military dictatorship was eliminated, Spain pushed itself to modernize and enhance its economy.

Today the country has one of the best performing economies in the world and is one of the most developed and advanced countries in the world. Also, as the member of European Union and World Trade Organization, Spanish items are exported all over the world. The economy is also not dependent on one sector but is diversified.

The backbone of the economy is the strong industrial base. Some of the common industrial goods include shipbuilding, automobiles, textiles, chemicals and surgical equipment. In terms of agriculture, Spanish “Olives” and “wine” are famous for centuries. The country produces some best quality Olives, whose match is not found elsewhere in the world. From 2012 onwards, Spain was the worlds largest exporter/producer of the Olive oil worldwide.

Spanish is the official and mother tongue of the Spanish people. “Spanish” is also one of the largest and most common languages spoken all over the world due to its colonies. The regions whom Spain colonized still speak Spanish and some of them had declared it as the official language.

Roman Catholicism is the most dominant religion of Spain accounting for 70% of the total population followed by the non-religious people that made up 25% of the total population. In last few decades, the country saw a large number of immigrants from different regions. This is the reason a number of other minority religions exist including Muslim, Hindus, and Buddhists.

Spain has a rich and unique history. This is the reason a number of architectural wonders can be seen all over the country.
