Kazakhstan, officially the “Republic of Kazakhstan” is a sovereign country in Central Asia. In terms of area, the country is a 9th largest country in the world and is one of the largest landlocked countries.

The country has a diverse culture and is famous for its Geography, cities, Kazakh culture, artifacts, and museums. Bordering countries of Kazakhstan include Russia towards the North and West, China towards the East, and; Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan towards the South. The country is a member of the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The human history in the region can be traced back to the Neolithic age after the area was discovered and due to its geographical features, it was suited best for human settlements.

The first known people to settle in the area were Cuman (Turkic Nomadic) that settled in the 11th century. Later, during the 13th century, the region joined the Mongol empire as Genghis Khan was driving towards the west.

After the Mongol influence vanished, the region came under the reign of Kazakh Khanate. During the period, no important event occurred and people lived peaceful (Nomadic) life were mostly dependent on livestock. By the 19th century, the Russian Empire was powerful enough and started to extend its territory towards Central Asia.

Soon the area of modern Kazakhstan and its neighboring areas were annexed by the Russian Empire. The empire also built military outposts and garrisons to maintain an active presence. The local Muslims were against this occupation from the begging and many events occurred in which the local population raised against the Soviets, most notably the “Basmachi movement”.

After the Russian Civil War, the Russian Empire was replaced by the Soviet Union and Kazakhstan became “Kazak Soviet Socialist Republic” a full member of the USSR. Many administrative changes were made in the country and for some of them, the Kazakh people heavily paid e.g. “Famine in Kazakhstan 1932-1933”.

As World War 2 broke out, mineral extraction from the country increases plus a number of other rations and men were sent to increase the war effort and production. 1n 1947, the Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb in the “Semipalatinsk Test Site” (Northeast of Kazakhstan).

Later, hundreds of other tests were conducted by the Soviet Union despite the local protest, as it had a tremendous effect on the ecological and biological systems of the country. it was not until December 1991, when Kazakhstan declared its independence and emerged as an independent nation, ending the long-term occupation. Also, Kazakhstan was one of the last ex-Soviet states to do so.

Kazakhstan is blessed with a huge mass of land but sadly it has no access to International waters. The country is one of the most beautiful in Central Asia and features steppes, flatlands, hills, mountains, deserts, deltas and rock canyons.

Forests are very less in the country but has a rich wildlife and is also home to a number of endangered species. Some of the common species include wolf, red fox, corsac fox, moose, argali, Eurasian lynx, Pallas's cat, and snow leopards.

Some serious environmental threats still loam in the country by human activities like lack of dumping industrial waste, use of fertilizers, pollution, and chemicals. One of the most serious threats towards the environment comes from the nuclear radiations.

During the times of USSR, hundreds of nuclear tests were carried out in the region which still has serious effects on the environment and local population like anemia, leukemia, radiation poisoning and birth defects.

Kazakhstan has one of the stabilized and rapidly growing economies in Central Asia and has an abundant amount of natural resources especially oil and uranium. The country has the largest uranium reserves in the world behind only Australia.

Oil is the country’s largest export product. The main economic sectors are Services, Agriculture, and Industrial sector. Some of the common industries include oil refining, automobiles assembly, construction materials, agriculture machinery and a number of other similar outputs.

“Kazakhs” are the largest ethnic group present in the country. Other common ethnic groups include Russians, Uzbeks, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Poles, and Lithuanians. “Russian” is the official language of the country and is also used for educational and official purposes. “Kazakh” is the second most widely spoken language and has indigenous importance.

Islam is the principal religion of the country accounting for 70% of the total population followed by Christianity which accounts for 24% of the total population. (2010 census). Also, the country’s constitution grants religious freedom to every individual of the country.
