Andaman and Nicobar Islands Information:

These islands are in the Bay of Bengal and are literally closer to Myanmar than India. In fact, they are also closer to Indonesia. They are to the South and Southeast of mainland India.

The first sun rays of the new millennium i.e. (01-01-2000) were greeted by The Great islands of Andaman & Nicobar. (The new millennium started at the stroke of 0000 hrs on 01-01-2000 in Greenwich. At that time, the clock has shown 0600 hrs or so in the Andaman Islands and thus the Sun greeted the earth on the new millennium at this place.)

It is rather difficult to state as to when these islands, about 300 in all, came into Indian ownership. Historical records show that these islands were under the possession of Maratha Rulers. With the loss of independence of Indian Princely States to the British rulers, these islands also came under British Rule. During the second world war for a brief period, the Japanese also ruled these islands.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands Important Information

The British used these islands for penal settlements. Perhaps, incurable dacoits and the like were consigned to this place in lieu of the death penalty. Later this place was the area to which freedom fighters were sent away. Notable among such people was Bala Gangadhar Tilak who spent a few years for leading independence moment. It was at this place, he translated the famous Bhagawat Gita and made a notable contribution to Marathi literature. This work of his is now translated into several languages including English which is considered far more authentic than any other commentary available till then. The famous Maratha revolutionary Veer Savarkar was convicted to serve imprisonment in Andamans. He was being carried by ship. From the toilet window of the ship, he jumped into the sea and escaped.

Slowly several people from the mainland of India notably from Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Kerala, and other places are settled here. There are several indigenous tribal populations widely dispersed over some of the islands. Several islands however till now are unpopulated. Some of these natives till recently were headhunters.

Hence government did not permit tourists to move to the interiors of these islands. The natives are far removed in time when compared to the rest of India or even the world. The government does not like to interfere with their mode of living. They lead an isolated life under greatly protected conditions from the rest of the world. Some of the surviving islanders remind that they are relics of even the stone age. This is a great mystery as to how these people are left out when compared to the rest of the world.

The British established a penal colony in 1858. It is reminiscent of them establishing a similar colony in Australia, which later became an independent Commonwealth nation. The convicts and others in Andaman & Nicobar Islands were used to the making of roads, ports, harbors etc. mainly to serve the British Empire.

A notorious jail called Cellular Jail was built here in around 1900 to where the freedom fighters were consigned. In Hindi, this place was called Kala Pani (Black Water) were living was literally driving people to death. There were separate cells for each convict and no communication was there among the convicts. Such cells were nearly 700 in number. One can imagine the struggle of freedom fighters. Some of the surviving tribes are Onges, Jarawas, and Sentinelese.

A bulk of the islands are not populated. The terrain is mostly hilly with little flat land and fresh water.

Since there is little human contact with the native residents one cannot say as to how many languages are alive and how many are extinct. It is observed that they enjoy music and dance and, hold your breath, football.

The 2004 Tsunami hit hard on these islands. Several of the people died in that tornado. Some of the islands have even disappeared from the atlas.

The present population of these islands is about 4 lacs and centrally administered.

It is home to the Indian Navy. INS Jarwa is housed in these islands.
