Sudan, officially known as North Sudan is an African country lying in the North Eastern Part of the continent. The country is known for its isolated terrain, culture, people, and wildlife. Bordering countries of Sudan include Egypt towards the North, Chad towards the West, South Sudan towards the South, Libya towards the Northwest, the Central African Republic towards the Southwest, and Eritrea and Ethiopia towards the East.

In terms of area, Sudan is a third largest country on the African continent. Although the country got its independence long-ago, instability, terrorism, crimes, political turmoil, unemployment, and falling economy still haunt the country. Also, due to these reasons, South Sudan got separated.

History of modern Sudan dates back to thousands of years. People started settling in the region around 8th millennium BC. These people were mostly hunters, basic farmers and often had herds.

As the time passed, many kingdoms and states thrived in the region, in their own respective times. By the mid-7th century, Muslim armies started to influence the region and after a long-term struggle, they managed to occupy the land.

This was also the period from which Islamic influence in the region began and Muslims are the most dominant people in Sudan till this date. By the start of the 19th century, Sudan came under the occupation of the Ottoman Empire which lasted till the end of the century until the arrival of the British.

British forces remained in the region till 1956, when finally, Sudan was given the right to self-rule. From partition to the present date, Sudan has not seen peace and saw numerous military coups, terrorism, civil wars and human right violations. Also, due to these events, Sudan has been isolated from the rest of the world and its image is really bad.

The geographic features of Sudan are diverse ranging from deserts, rivers mountains, green belts, and forests. River Nile is one of its most prominent feature which runs across the country for approx. 3000 km.

Natural Resources are also abundant in the country with Petrol as the major product, while other minerals include gold, silver, chromium, zinc, copper, tungsten, etc. Some of the environmental issues also do exist in Sudan such as lack of adequate water, deforestation, poaching, and pollution.

These are due to the lack of government consideration and wars. The average rainfall in Sudan is high in Southern regions because of the greenbelts but is very low in North and Middle parts due to large deserts.

The economy of the country is mostly dependent on oil and petroleum products. The partition of South Sudan was a huge blow to the country as it contained 80% of its oilfields. Other economic sectors include agriculture (cotton, peanuts, sesame seeds, mangoes, barley, wheat, corn, yams, tobacco), manufacturing, textiles, automobile industries, services.

Tourism is very negligible in the country due to unstable conditions. But if developed properly, Sudan can become as one of the most favorite tourist destinations, as it has ancient Islamic heritage and culture. Also, it features numerous landscapes and sceneries, which can attract a lot of tourists.

Arabs are the largest ethnic group present in Sudan. These people came during the Islamic conquest of Northern Africa. Some other ethnic people also do exist like Copts, Nubians, and Zaghawa. Arabic and English are the official languages of the country.

There are also over 70 local languages spoken in the country. Islam is the most dominant religion in Sudan and accounts for approx. 97% of the total population.
