Tunisia Country Information

Tunisia, officially the “Republic of Tunisia” is an independent country located in Northwest Africa. The country is known for its culture, Islamic architect, Museums, Historical ruins, and a number of other things.

Bordering countries of Tunisia include Libya towards the Southeast and Algeria towards the Southwest and west. Tunisia has a number of achievements and developments, especially in the political world as it is the only country to have a fully democratic government in the Arab world.

Tunisia posses a long-term history from ancient to modern times, it is estimated that farming techniques started in the region around 5000 BC. Different indigenous tribes and people lived in the regions of modern Tunisia before the arrival of Romans in 148 BC.

During the time of Roman reign, the area was highly-developed and enjoyed several facilities. Farming thrived and many new products such as Olive oil were introduced. Several Roman buildings can be still seen in the country.

By the mid-7th century (Middle Ages), Tunisia was conquered by Muslim forces incoming from the Middle East (Muslim Conquest of North Africa). Muslims also made countless efforts to improve the architect, facilities, and condition of the region.

From 1534-1881, Tunisia was under the reign of the mighty Ottoman Empire and forced the Spanish to withdraw from some of its occupied territories in North Africa.

In 1881, the economic situation of Tunisia was desperate and had no other choice, Tunisia became a French protectorate and remained till 1956 when finally, it was given independence.

Much of the Tunisian land is fertile and has rich soil except the Atlas Mountains stretch and some parts of the Great Sahara Desert.

Some of the environmental hazards include deforestation, soil erosion, and toxic waste.

Dependent economic sectors of Tunisia include oil, agricultural products, services, manufacturing, and tourism. Some of the main industries include textile, beverages, chemicals, mining, and iron.
Arabic is the official and most widely spoken language of the country, while French is also common due to the French colonial period.

Islam is followed by approx. 98% of the total population and is declared as the state religion of Tunisia.
