Washington state (WA) Information:

Washington, authentically the “State of Washington” is a US state in the Northwestern part of the country on the Pacific coast. The state was once a British territory but was ceded to the US following the Oregon Treaty.

The state is 13th most populous and 18th largest US state in terms of area. The population is also centralized and around 60% of the total population lives in Seattle and its suburbs.

The bordering states of Washington include Idaho towards the East and Oregon towards the South, while the Canadian province of British Columbia lies towards its North. The state is named after the first US President “George Washington” and founding father of the United States.

Earliest human history in the region dates back to 13,000 years as estimated by the scientists. The aboriginal Americans were living in the regions of Washington for thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans.

They had a unique culture and were famous for “totem poles” which was the significant part of their culture. They were dependent on fishing (salmon), whale-hunting, agriculture and food gathering. Some of the common tribes of that time include Snohomish, Quileute, Klickitat, Chinook, and many others.

Till today, many of them are still living in the state and the US government and reserved separate lands for these tribal people. Juan Perez (Spanish) was the first European to locate and land on the modern-day Washington coast.

Later on, the region and its suburbs were discovered by many Spanish and British explores especially, Captain James Cook. In 1807, the region was precisely explored by the Canadian explorer “David Thompson” whom claimed the region for the British crown.

Soon afterward, settlements started in the region followed by traders and Business companies. The fur trade was one of their main objective. Later America and British faced several disputes over the Washington territory and by the mid-19th century, British power in the region decreases and British ceded the Oregon territory which included modern-day Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming towards the US in “Oregon Treaty”.

Afterward, American settlers started to settle in the area due to the natural environment and rich resources. Washington was granted statehood on 11 November 1898 and Became the 42nd state of the United States of America.

During the World War 2, the state contributed much towards the country’s war effort by constructing Heavy Bombers (Boeing B-29) and Naval ships. In 1943, “Hanford Works Nuclear plant” was opened in the state which created some of the first US atomic bombs and one of which was dropped on Nagasaki.

Geographically Washington lies in the Pacific Northwest region and features countless features which include islands, fjords, mountains, glaciers, rivers, rainforests, grasslands, and valleys. Western parts of the state feature mountains and forests while the Eastern part is dry and features deserts.

The climate of the state varies with areas, height, etc. as the Western part includes forests, rainfall is high while the Eastern part is mostly dry due to deserts. Approx. 52% of the total state’s area is covered by forests.

In addition, there are several reserves, wildlife parks and reserves for the Native Americans. The state also attributes rich wildlife and some of them include black bear, deer, cougar, gray wolf, mountain beaver, raccoon, elk, coyote, etc. Also, the state has over 1000 dams which feature different services like hydropower, irrigation, flood control, etc.

The economy of Washington is highly diversified and is leading in technological and manufacturing sectors. The numerous US and worldwide high-tech companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, and Costco are located in the state.

In addition, several other sectors are also active in the state which ranges from biotechnology, Starbucks, chemicals, petroleum, pharmacy, shipbuilding, software development to lumber and agricultural production.

Nevertheless, the state is one of the leading agricultural producers from the very start. Some of the common agricultural products include strawberries, raspberries, cherries, apples, pears, hops, potatoes, onions, peas, and grapes. Also, some of the world’s richest personalities and several US billionaires reside in the state and include “Bill Gates”, Jeff Bezos, 's Paul Allen, Steve Ballmer etc.

Christianity is the largest single religion of the state and is further divided into numerous sects. Minority religions include Jews, Hindus, Muslims and other religions while non-religious people account for 32% of the total population.
