Syria Country Information

Syria, precisely the “Syrian Arab Republic” is a sovereign nation located in West Asia. The country borders Jordan towards the South, Lebanon towards the West, Iraq towards the East, Turkey towards the North and Israel towards the Southwest.

The country is known for its ethnic culture, traditions, ancient remains, historical forts, World Heritage sites, beautiful mosques, and ethics.

The country also preserves some of the oldest Muslim architect and buildings. Majority of the regions of Syria are fertile and mountainous. Currently, ongoing “Syrian Civil War” has devastated much of the country and most of its infrastructure it’s destroyed.

Evidence found in the area such as sculptures, pottery, figures, and tools show that the area is inhabited by the humans for 10,000 years (approx.) Some of the earliest known tribes were Hurrian, Akkad, Hattian, Assyria, and Sumer.

As the time passed countless Empires thrived in the region and Syria was also placed for many decisive battles. Some of the famous kingdoms of that time include the Egyptian Empire, the Middle Assyrian Empire, the Babylonian Empire, Alexander the Great, Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire.

By the middle ages, Syria fell towards the Muslim armies under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad. This was the begging of the Islamic era in the region and till this date, Muslims are dominant in the country.

Also, due to such early arrival, Syria has some of the oldest mosques in different cities. Initially, the ancient city of Damascus served as the capital of the Muslim Empire.

By the 11th and 12th centuries, Crusaders armies were present in the region and regions of Palestine and Syria were under their reign. But this was short-lived as they were soon defeated by the army of “Salah-ad-Din Ayyubi” (founder of Ayyubid Dynasty).

Mongols also had some influence in the region but were soon defeated by the “Mamluks”. By the 16th century, Ottomans Armies were strong enough and invaded Syria and its surroundings.

Their reign remained until World War One when British and French forces occupied Syria. After, the World War 2, although Syria was granted independence, proper peace was not maintained due to multiple wars with neighboring Israel and Lebanon.

Till today, the country is involved in the Civil War (due to the involvement of foreign countries and agencies), which has destroyed much of its infrastructure, economy, homes and led to the death of millions.

Many of its people have taken refuge in neighboring countries. The situation is improving swiftly but the loss will not be recovered soon.

Geographic features of Syria are diverse and beautiful. Western regions feature mountains while the East features desert. The northern areas are green and fertile, while the island is steep and plain.

Irrigation is done best in the country due to suitable conditions. Mount Hermon is the country’s highest point. We hope that soon the conflict will end in the region and the beautiful features of the country are preserved.

The country has abundant resources of oil and gas but due to several conflicts, the government failed to maintain proper output and export.

Islam is the dominant religion of Syria which is further divided into Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims. Also, Islam has a special cultural and architectural significance in the country.

Christians are still present in the country as a minority. Before the creation of Syria, a significant number of Jews were also present in the country but they migrated towards Israel, US, and England.

Arabic is the official and most spoken language of the country and has also Religious significance towards the Muslims. Syrians Arabs are the main ethnic group and the made-up majority of the population.
