Cambodia Information

Cambodia, authentically “Kingdom of Cambodia” is an independent country in Southeast Asia, located on the Southern part of the Indochina Peninsula. Neighboring countries of Cambodia include Vietnam towards the east, Thailand towards the northwest; and Laos towards the northeast.

Although the country got its independence in 1960 the political, social and economic matters are not yet solved and the country faces numerous issues.

As the Vietnam War broke out, many resisting Vietnamese groups sought shelter in Cambodia and Cambodia was bombed by US Airforce from 1969-1973 and tens of thousands of Cambodian innocent people died.

The geography of Cambodia is marked by fertile plains, low-lying mountains, hills, lakes, tropical forests, and rivers. Due to fertile land and abundant water resources farming and agriculture is done on large scale and is one of the most contributing sectors towards the economy.

Most of the wildlife and other species of Cambodia are found in the forest areas and reserves. But sad to say environmental destruction is active on large scale in the country and is ranked one of the worst countries in terms of environmental protection.

Agriculture is the dominant sector of Cambodia’s economy followed by textile industries and tourism. As the country has rich and fertile lands, agriculture is one of the best economic sectors and a number of crops especially rice is grown.

Other crops include maize, cassava, sweet potatoes, groundnuts, soybeans, sesame seeds, dry beans. Garment (textile) industry has also a strong base in Cambodia and accounts for almost 80% of Cambodia’s exports.

Tourism is one of the fastest growing economic sectors of the country and there is a number of places of interest for tourists like heritage Sites, temples, culture, and tradition of the local people.

The “Khmer language” is the official language declared by the country. French is still spoken by some of the aged people as the area remained a French colony for a long period.

But in modern time, the Influence of English is increasing in the country and English is often used for educational and foreign purposes.

Theravada Buddhism is the state religion of Cambodia and is followed by the majority of the population, around 97%. Some of the minority religions of the country include Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, folk religion and small non-religious community.
