Hi Suresh, My English is not the best, our language is Dutch, so please don't mind. I have done some research on my own family, all of them have their kitchen in the south-west and they have problems related to stomach and digestion, I am surprised! What is Scientific temper is the basic question. The word temper has a wide range of meaning. It is an attitude of mind, a blend, a quality or a conviction.

Scientific temper would naturally mean the conviction to accept only such things as enter the domain or frontiers of science.

Like steel which on receiving temper acquires a special quality and cuts things which come its way, retains resilience and abrasion resistance, men with science temper would refuse to accept things which do not stand the test of science, no matter how formidable the opposition is or how tempting the offers are.

What is science after all? Any comprehensive knowledge which is impersonal, imortal and reproducible and which is acquired through powers of perception, creative reasoning and scientific methods comes under the broad definition of the term science.

As distinct from other types of knowledge, scientific knowledge has two characteristics. They are accuracy and precision.

Knowledge that lacks either or both these features does not come within the realm of scientific knowledge. Like the strands of a spider’s web, scientific knowledge also represents different disciplines well knit into an elegant and meaningful pattern.

Science knows no failure. It is precisely for this reason that when Apollow 11 was a success and man could soil his feet on the surface of the moon, the feat was acclaimed as scientific achievement and when Apollo 13 failed in its mission, the failure was termed an engineering failure.

Now the question is what is the relevance between scientific knowledge and pattern of society for mutual good. To answer this question one has to recall to memory the impediments posed and the road breach caused in the development of science because of lack of science temper on the pat of the society.

True, Aristotle was a great philosopher and scientist. But it was the misfortune of science that he had his own dogmas, fads and dictates.

One such dogma was that according to him a 1 lb. wt. even when both the weights are made of the same material.

His another fad was that a woman’s jaw contained less teeth than a man’s jaw. So towering was his personality and so much conformism he expected from his students and followers, that no one would dare try an experiment to verify his statements.

The society was content with the statement ‘Magister dixit’ meaning ‘The Master has spoken’ and accept his words as Gospel truth.

It is indeed shocking that even after 18 centuries after Aristotle, Galileo had hard time to demonstrate from the top of the leaning tower of Pisa the falsehood of the Master to the dismay of the intellectuals assembled over there.

Needless to say that open mind, courage of conviction to verify things and nonconformism. Would surely have changed the pace of scientific persuits and paved the way for developing science at much greater pace, for greater benefits to society.

The misery, the agony, the persecution and the torture meted out to medieval scientists are beyond description.

Bruno was burnt alive for telling the plain truth that it is the earth which moves round the Sun and not the latter which was the faith of the Church then.
