Brunei Information:

Brunei, officially the “Nation of Brunei” is an independent country located in Southeast Asia, on the northern part of the Borneo Island. The country is bordered by only the Malaysian state of Sarawak and towards its north, lies the strategic “South China Sea”.

Although, small in size, the country is one of the wealthiest and most developed country in the region. The country was also colonized by British and was a British Protectorate until it gained its independence in 1984.

Brunei has a long-term history of foreign occupations and interventions. One of the earliest recorded histories of the can be found in Chinese manuscripts in which the situation of the area is described.

The area is described as wealthy and has an extensive trade. Later, the “Sultanate of Brunei” influenced the area and 15th and 16th centuries were the time when the Sultanate was on its peak and controlled relatively large area form coasts of northwestern Brunei to the southern Philippines.

Later, the foreign intervention started in the area and the region was colonized one by one. Spain was one of the first countries to do so by declaring war in 1578. These all events led to the decline of the Sultanate. Also, British intervened in the country’s matter’s several times.

The Sultan of Brunei finally signed an agreement with British in 1998 to ensure protection from any further misadventures. This led British to gain full control and power in the area.

During the British times, oil was first discovered in the area and was in 1929. As the World War 2 broke out, the area came under the Japanese occupation 0n 16 Dec 1941, the allied forces in the area were soon overrun by the Japanese.

The was one of the most difficult and harsh periods as there were constant bombing by Allied (American, British and Australian) forces with led to the destruction of resourced, infrastructure and property of the locals. On 10th June 1945, the Australian forces landed in the area and Brunei was finally retaken from the Japanese.

The geography of Brunei features lowlands and mostly plains that are grassy and fertile, but the region towards the east is mostly covered by mountains and forests.

Most of the population of the country, about 97% lives in the western part (plains) and the remaining approx. 10,000 live in the mountainous region.

Brunei has one of the largest oil and gas reserves and is the 4th largest producer of petroleum products in Southeast Asia. The petroleum sector is the backbone of the country’s economy and accounts for more than 90% of the total GDP.

The present strategy adopted by the government is to lift the dependency on oil and is pushing for more investments worldwide and other sectors. One of the burdens on its economy is that over 60% of its food and agricultural products are imported. This is due to the small land available for cultivation.

Islam is the official and dominant religion of the country. Islam has deep roots in the country’s history and was first adopted during the 15th century when Muslim Sultan was made the ruler of the area.

Other religions like Buddhism and Christianity have also a significant foothold in the area. “Standard Malay” is the official language of the country but the Melayu Brunei is the most commonly spoke language. As Arabic is the religious language of the Muslims, it is used in all Islamic, educational and preaching purposes.
