History of Bulgaria: Bulgaria, officially the “Republic of Bulgaria” is an independent country in Southeastern Europe. The country is considered as one of the oldest states in the world. Bulgaria adopted democracy in 1991.

The bordering countries of Bulgaria include Greece and Turkey towards the South (South vastu), Romania towards the North (North vastu) and Serbia and Macedonia towards its west (West vastu). The country is a member of European Union (EU), NATO and Council of Europe. The country has highly stabilized economy and highly developed educational, transportation and other sectors.

The human history in Bulgaria can be traced backed to the Neolithic period. In ancient time the area saw the Influence of many famous empires like Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, Goths, Alans, and Huns. The first humans in the area were inhabitants of the local tribes known as the “Bulgars”.

The first Bulgarian state emerged in 681 AD. It was succeeded by second Bulgarian empire which kept struggling with the Byzantine empire until its fall 1396, after which it was occupied by the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottomans ruled Bulgaria for over 5 centuries and were marked by events of the uprising, revolts, and protests against the occupiers. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the third Bulgarian state emerged and Bulgaria was free after the long-term occupation.

After the emergence of the third Bulgarian empire, a number of Disputes started with its neighboring country and led Bulgaria to align with Germany in both of World Wars.

As Germany was defeated in both wars, Bulgaria paid heavily because of its alliance and after World War-II, Soviet Union annexed Bulgaria under its Eastern bloc and remained under the Soviet sphere of influence until 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed and Bulgaria became a democratic republic.

The geography and terrain of Bulgaria are diverse and impressing. It features a number of features like rivers, plains, plateaus, hills, and mountains.

There are a variety of landscapes, snowy mountains, lush green plains, sunny beaches of the Black Sea. Also, the country has great strategic importance and control important key routes from Europe to middle-east and Asia.

The most common geographical and topological features of Bulgaria are Danubian Plain, Balkan Mountains, Thracian Plain and the Rhodope Mountains.

Also, the government of Bulgaria has passed official acts to protect and preserve the National environment, wildlife, ecosystems and endangered species. Some of the environmental issues are air pollution, polluted rivers, soil contamination, and deforestation. All of these are due to the industrial base of Bulgaria and people are facing serious health issues.

The economy of Bulgaria is largely privatized and accounts for approx. 80% of its GDP. At the mid of 20th century, the country was largely dependent on agriculture.

But as time passed most of its economy is industrialized. The trade and market of Bulgaria are synchronized with other markets of Europe as it is a member of the European Union and World Trade Organization (WTO).

The dominant and most stable sectors of the economy are energy, mining, tourism, agriculture, and industries. Also, another advantage to its economy is that all of its sectors use local (national) resources.

The largest trading partners with which most of the import/export is done are Germany, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Russia, Greece, France, Spain, Poland, Netherlands, China, Hungary, and Belgium.

Almost 72-73% of the total population of Bulgaria lives in Urban areas. Bulgarians are the most dominating ethical group accounting for 84.5% of the total population.

Other minorities include Turkish 9.6% and Roma 4.1%. Bulgarian is the only official language of the country and is widely spoken and most common language.

Modern Bulgaria offers religious freedom to all of its residents but historically the country has adopted Christianity as the state religion from 865. Christianity is the largest religion in the country. Islam arrived in the area during the times of Ottoman occupation. There are 8% Muslims in a total population of Bulgaria.
